What's a Collegium?
collegium: 'A group whose members pursue shared goals while working within a framework of mutual trust and respect.'
The Bolz Center Collegium draws alumni, students, and friends from across the country to explore essential aspects of the field, identify streams of teaching and learning, and celebrate their collective efforts to advance the arts.

| | Honestly exploring the value of arts and culture to people, places, and the public purpose. |
NOTE: This event has passed. This area of the site will remain as an archive of the conversation, and an updated resource for the ideas that spin out from our time in Madison.
nce upon a time, there was economic impact. Then educational benefit. Then social capital. Then livable cities. Then the 'creative class.' For the past decades, we've stumbled through a number of efforts to attach value to arts and cultural activity.
It isn't just an academic question. The concept of 'value' is a fundamental force in why audiences buy tickets, why donors share wealth, why communities support (or don't support) culture, why foundations craft guidelines, why government gets involved, and why artists, staff, boards, and volunteers expend so much energy for such little economic reward.
We know there's value there somewhere. Compelling cases have been made, but too often the definitions don't translate and the formulas don't compute.
Are we too cautious? Too clumsy? Has our non-profit mindset caused us to look at too small a picture, or—worse—distorted the view?
Join your colleagues in Madison for two days in October for an honest, compelling, and collaborative conversation on how arts managers, leaders, and supporters can value what they do, and work more directly to release that value on the world. Guiding the conversation will be two provocateurs from the national and international forum—former NEA chairman Bill Ivey and international arts consultant Adrian Ellis—and a full spectrum of Bolz Center alumni, local arts leaders, and friends.
In between the volleys, there will be time to mix, mingle, and reminisce; to experience Madison and its brand new Overture Hall (our site for day two); and to reconnect with old friends while forging a few new friendships, as well.
It's fall. It's Madison. It's a group of exceptionally fun and insightful people. It's a topic that makes a difference in your work, your thinking, and your life. It shouldn't be hard to find the value in that!
