Bolz Center Director Andrew Taylor was a contributing author for a recent monograph on the role of arts and culture in building creative communities. "Cultural Development in Creative Communities," published in November by Americans for the Arts, provides background and strategy for arts managers, policy makers, and community members seeking to build more engaging cities through the arts. Other authors of the monograph included community development consultant Bill Bulick, smart cities advocate Carol Coletta, performing arts center manager Colin Jackson, and cultural management consultant Steven A. Wolff (full bios available in the monograph).
The monograph seeks to:
- Summarize the work of Richard Florida and other economic development strategists and define the implications for cultural development;
- Describe how this current opportunity fits into cultural development theory and practice over the last couple of decades;
- Examine Portland, Oregon, as a creative city case study;
- Suggest specific cultural development and planning practices which link to current economic development and broader community building strategies; and
- Begin to build a list of recent studies and research about these issues through a curated bibliography of web and printed resources.
The 12-page monograph is
available for download in PDF format (~1.2 megabytes, requires
