Personal
RSS Aggregators
Jon Udell spots a new trend toward decentralization of newsfeed,
away from 'respected' news media giants, toward a loose-knit
interconnected network of specialists publishing their own
perspectives and syndicating the results. You'll also find
links to personal news aggregator software that allow you
to syndicate lots of headlines into your own personal space.
- "Syndication
on the Cheap with RSS"
Information architect Karl Fast describes the "low
road" to content syndication, and the "stunningly
simple" solution provided by RSS.
- "An
Introduction to RSS Newsfeeds:
Using Open Formats for Content Syndication"
James Lewin, President of The Lewin Group, gives an overview
of the RSS headline file format and its uses. You'll also
find discussion of 'metadata', the creation, publishing,
and parsing of headline files, and links to references on
the protocol.
- "Making
Headlines with RSS"
Another overview of the RSS headline file format, especially
as it relates to drawing visitors to a web site. From a
February 2000 issue of WebTechniques magazine.
- "Journalist,
Syndicate Thyself"
Here's an article for freelance journalists on self-syndication
through the web. While the audience is a bit off-topic,
the article does give a good overview of two forms of syndication
techniques -- bloggers and RSS.
Background
Articles
- "Knowledge
Tools: Using Technology to Manage Knowledge Better"
(Adobe Acrobat file, requires the free
Acrobat reader)
by Rudy Ruggles, Ernst & Young LLP, April 1997
Offers a good overview of knowledge management, including
the 'types of distance' that degrade knowledge transfer
(temporal, physical, social, etc.)
- "Open(Source)ing
the Doors for Contributor-Run Digital Libraries"
by Paul Jones
Communications of the ACM, May 2001/Vol. 44, No.
5
From the article: "What if you could wave a wand and
make libraries -- at least digital libraries -- more open,
easier to manage, cheaper, and even more eclectic and democratic?
What if content contributors could submit, catalog, index,
manage, rate, and rank materials in large collections themselves?
Thanks to innovations from the open-source community and
perhaps more importantly the free-software community, I
believe we can have contributor-run libraries today."
Examples
- Art
Museum Network News
AMN News is the official online news site of the Art Museum
Network, with news items provided by AMN's member institutions.
Publishing and production are made possible through the
support of Reuters, the global news, information and technology
company.
- Plastic
A news and idea sharing portal using content management
and headline sharing technologies. Worth a look to see how
all news items posted can become the beginning of on-line
conversations.
